Pillow Covers Made from Granny's Curtains
My family decided to change the curtains in the living room and dining room recently. The curtains that they removed were the ones that my grandmother had chosen many years ago. My aunt asked if I could make two throw pillow covers out of Granny's curtains as a memento for her and my other aunt.
Tuesday Stitches' Sewing a Pillow with Piping and an Invisible Zipper
I wanted to somehow incorporate the trim, but upon closer inspection I saw that the fringe was tied with elastic rather than matching thread. The elastic had discolored and turned a weird yellow color over time.
The pillow inserts were 16" x 16". I cut out 16" x 16" pieces of fabric for the front and back pillow. I estimated that the pillow cover would end up being about 15" x 15" or so after creating the seams.
I stitched around the edges of the fabric to try and prevent it from fraying too much when I started to assemble the cover.
Here I finally got the hang of how close the zipper foot needed to be next to the cord.
A much-needed ice cream break! Rocky Road ice cream from Cookiebar.
I learned that a 9" zipper on a 14" pillow cover was almost too short. I had some difficulty cramming the pillow into the cover.
I was a bit worried about the thread tension when I was winding the bobbin. I was correct to worry because the bobbin thread kept getting jammed. I also broke a needle trying in the process of trying to figure out what the issue was.
